Lahore: May 21, 2007. Walter Fazal is arrested by Samanabad Police and sent to jail under section 295 B PPC on complaint of his Muslim servant Raja Mohammad Riaz. Riaz alleged that Walter Fazal aged 79, has burnt a copy of Koran in his house

Samanabad is posh residential area in Lahore city where property value has boomed in recent years and house where Walter Fazal resides is also estimated in millions. It is reported that Fazal has turned down offers of many real estate builders to sell his property.

On May 9, Muslim servant Riaz Mohammad came on street shouting that Walter Fazal has burnt copy of Koran in his home. When few Muslim trespassed home he was in shower room and Koran was burning on entrance lobby of house.

Riaz Mohammad approached nearby mosque and called Pesh Imam. When Muslim Mob attacked his home and beating Walter, some neighbour called local police. Police filed a case under blasphemy charges and sent Fazal to judicial custody.

When family members of Walter Fazal came to visit Mrs. Walter aged 84, they were stopped by some unknown bearded persons to meet Gladys Fazal.

The house occupants said “Mrs. Gladys Walter has converted to Islam on May 10, and don’t want to meet Christians”

Najam Fazal, son of Walter Fazal approached Lahore High Court and filed a petition to meet his mother. When Najam approached along with High Court clerk to his home, her mother was found seriously ill and she refused of her conversion to Islam. The Lahore High Court awarded custody of Gladys to her son Najam and she is admitted in hospital for treatment.

In this blasphemy case, no investigation was conducted and charges were filed on complaint of Muslim servant while law demands of investigation by magistrate to frame blasphemy charges.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Christians in a Pakistani town beset by pro-Taliban militants sought government protection Wednesday, the eve of a deadline for them to convert to Islam or face violence.

About 500 Pakistani Christians in Charsadda, a town in the North West Frontier Province bordering Afghanistan, received letters earlier this month telling them to close their churches and convert by Thursday or be the target of "bomb explosions."

Several Christians, a tiny minority in the predominantly Muslim country, have fled town and others are living in fear, community leaders said.

Some complained that police were not taking the threat seriously.

"Police say someone is joking with us by writing these letters," Chaudhry Salim, a Charsadda Christian leader, said during a news conference in Islamabad. "They have deployed only two policemen at our churches ... this is the kind of security we are getting now."

Shahbaz Bhatti, a prominent Christian leader and head of the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance, said the provincial government, which is controlled by a coalition of pro-Taliban religious parties, would bear blame for attacks after the deadline. READ MORE

(Correspondent CCNews Portal) ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday said that Pakistan does not need to adopt an apologetic approach on religious Madaris rather “We should be proud of these institutions that are imparting education.”

At the same time, the prime minister maintained that the government is well aware of its responsibilities to take action against those spreading hatred and extremism. “There are some Madaris that are involved in extremism and we will definitely take action against them,” the prime minister said in his inaugural speech at a two-day international conference on “Governing for MDGs” -with focus on incentives, ownership and institutions” being organized by National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) and the World Bank Institute.

Aziz said Pakistan would achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the end of 2015. “We are pursuing a national agenda and not personal agenda.” With the implementation of good governance and transparency, he said, the government was moving ahead to achieve the MDGs. We have taken reforms for improvements in all sectors.” Attributing success in continuity and consistency in government reforms, he spoke at length about the progress Pakistan has made in each of these areas and said unless “there is a sense of ownership in the home-grown policies and self-reliance, it is difficult to achieve these ambitious goals.”

The prime minister said that the government has a long way to go and undertake more reforms in every facet of society. A strong nation is built on the foundations of a strong economy.” With the growth rate of 7 per cent, he said, Pakistan would achieve all targets set for the current year. “Size of the economy has doubled and per capita income may go up to 950 dollars and cross the 1000 dollars mark next year.”

The prime minister claimed that poverty has declined from around 34.5 per cent to 24 per cent. Urban poverty dropped from 20 per cent to 15 per cent, while the rural from 39 per cent to 28 per cent and 13 million people have come out of the vicious circle of poverty.” Shaukat Aziz said the construction of Bhasha dam will increase water storage capacity and help meet country’s growing energy requirements.

Meanwhile, Speaker National Assembly Chaudhry Amir Hussain, while addressing the function, praised the NRB Chairman Daniyal Aziz while describing him as one of the best parliamentarians in present assemblies. The NRB chairman, in his address, said that the country needs to be pulled out of the influence of the British rule.

LAHORE ; (Correspondent CCNews Portal ) –A mentally deranged Pakistani Christian men who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court on blasphemy charged in

2004, was acquitted by Lahore high court on Friday, January 19, 2007. Khalil Tahir, defence counsel of Shahbaz Masih, told ANS about the acquittal of Masih in an exclusive interview on Friday.

Shahbaz Masih was an escapee from Government hospital for psychiatric diseases in Lahore, Pakistan .He was admitted to the hospital on August 23, 2000 after being diagnosed with Bipolar Effective Disorder. He fled from the hospital on September 4, 2000. But a trouble of a more horrific magnitude him as he was charged with torching pages of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, by a prayer leader of the Imam Masjid Mosque, Qari Muhammad Rafique, a resident of 8, Ismail park street, Faisalabad.

The complainant wrote in the application that he submitted to the police station on sargodha Road, Faisalabad, that he was teaching the police station on sargodha Road, Faisalabad, that he was teaching the Quran to student at the mosque when he heard the the voices from the nearby graveyard. The complainant went on to say in his application that, as he came out of the mosque with two muslim men named Muhammad Jamil and Muhammad Ali, they saw that Masih was trampling upon pages of Quran and was throwing them on the graveyard after having torched them .

The police First Information Report (FIR) number 315/2001, under seation 295 –A and B of Pakistan penel code, was lodged at the police station and, as a consequence, Masih was arrested on June 4.2001.

The Muslim cleric along with Muhammad Jamil, Muhammad Ali, the porsecution witnesses handed over the cross-wearing Masih to police after subjecting him to a thrashing.

We request that during your visit to Pakistan you raise the issues of the misuse of the blasphemy law and the exemption of Pakistani Christians from hudood and all other shariah law with the government of Pakistan.

The misuse blasphemy of laws has increased and has made it particularly difficult for Christians to live in Pakistan. Christians are living with a constant threat to their lives and in a last year alone, 8 blasphemy cases were registered against Christian(an all time high) on spurious charges, Bashir Masih (a Christian) was murdered on 30^th September 2006 in Bahawalpur jail (Pakistan).Bashir is not the only case, several innocent Christians have been murdered after being falsely accused of

blaspheming .Baba Bantu masih, Tahir Iqbal, Naimat Ahmer, Samuel Masih, Manzoor Masih ,Ashiq Nabi, are few of the many Pakistani Christians who were not even given the change to a fair trial. Many Christians have been in jail for several years because no judges are prepared to bring their cases to trial.

The blasphemy law provokes hatred and fury and encourages hostility towards minorities, particularly against Christians whose co-religionists in the west are blamed for the world ill.The law contributes to promote religious intolerance and when one Christians is accused it can lad to his family, friends and even the whole Christians neighborhood being attacked . In the recent years, several churches and Christian properties have been attacked and set to five; even whole villages were targeted by mobs of thousand of Muslims using ammunition .

The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan William during his visit to Pakistan last year raised this issue with Pakistani government and said “ I think it is widely recognized that the blasphemy laws is a major problem which this country has to tackle.”

The Hudood laws have also become tools for exploitation and are being frequently misused against women and religious minorities.CLAAS has been campaigning for its repeal or the exception of Christians from Hudood laws, as according to muslim scholars like Javed Gamdi, Shariah laws only apply to these who believe and follow the Quran and sunnah .As Christians witnesses are not admissible in some cases and Christians lawyers cannot appear in the court ,Christians find themselves defenceless and therefore do not expect a fair trail .However ,general laws are present in the country .

The Government is to date trying to evolve a consensus to amend the laws but the opposition (MMA) has threatened of dire consequences nevertheless,CLASS stands strong in its argument that Christian should be exempted from hudood and all other shariah laws .
